Please be aware that placing the condenser of AC outdoor in direct exposure of sunlight can cause impairment to the entire sir conditioning unit. Wondering how is that possible? Well, AC condenser not having a shade on top leads to direct contact with heat, sunlight and rain. It certainly affects the coils in the condenser and subsequently leads to internal damage. Consequently, the performance entire air conditioning unit is adversely affected. Either the condenser starts making noise or internal AC box doesn’t work well.
Then, where to place the condenser if it is not safe outside? That is a common query that majority has at the moment. Well the answer is quite simple that keeps your condensers outsides in open air but keep them safe from direct sunlight, heat and rain. For this purpose, you can build shades on top of AC condensers. That is easy to do but requires some technical knowledge so that you don’t block the air for the condenser.
It is specifically suggested to build a shade on the top of the air conditioning outdoor unit and not to build a case that covers the entire condenser. The reason is that condenser throws out the air picked up from indoors. If it is isolated in a box like case, there are probable chances that foils inside the condenser collapse.
To protect it from sunlight, heat and rain; the best way is to design a shade at least 1.5 feet above the condenser. Also, the size of the shade should be at least 1 foot bigger as size of the condenser. This will cause the shade to cover the entire unit adequately. The covering is to protect both the top and the sides from atmospheric exposure. However, the open sides will let the released air from the condenser to pass easily.
The shades can be made from metal sheets of 2cm thicker. It will be mounted with the wall beside with nuts and bolts. Another way is to place the shade in the form of a table. This is preferable when the air conditioning unit is not placed nearby any wall. Then a table like structure is made with the sides open and top covered. In this way, the condenser will be protected, shaded and covered sufficiently. It is not necessary to make the sides covered in a fence, however, it enhance the safety if fence is made.
Some people prefer net covering for the air conditioning outdoor unit. That is not recommended for the top shade as it will not fulfill the purpose. But as long as the sides-covering are concerned, net structure can be used. The loose metal-net coverings are preferred as thin net structure can also block the air flow. As a result, the condenser will bulk up the hot air inside, leading to poor performance of indoor air conditioning unit.
Overall, the shades are crucially important for the safety of the air conditioner outdoor unit. All you need to do is to spend 2-3 hours and it’ll be done. One most important factor to consider is that shade should be mounted into the wall stiffly so that it doesn’t fall off as it will not just be dangerous for the air conditioning unit but may also harm the people in surroundings.
